The body of Christ received a gift from God when Rev. Brian D. Hunter was born. Therefore it was by divine appointment that he followed in the footsteps of his father Elder Howard Hunter and his Grandfather Supt. Lavell Thompson when he acknowledged his call to the ministry at the age of nineteen. God has gifted him to speak to the body of Christ with a preaching and teaching style that is both practical and relevant to all who hear him. God is using him to touch and impact this contemporary age. Hunter began preaching and was licensed at the True Worshippers of God Baptist Church in Gardena, California under the leadership of Pastor Willie L. Radcliff.
In August of 1999 at the tender age of 29 he was called to pastor the historic Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in the city of West Oakland, Ca. He served faithfully in that assignment for seven fruitful years. After fulfilling his assignment there, he was called to the Berkeley Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he currently serves with joy. Pastor Hunter and the Berkeley Mt. Zion family believe that God has called them as pastor and people to Empower the people of God through ministry that goes beyond Sunday Morning.
Pastor Hunter has served the body of Christ in several capacities. He served two years as the president of the California State Baptist Youth Convention, which is the largest youth convention in the state of California. He was responsible for developing and overseeing the spiritual and educational programs for young people in over 80 churches. He served five years the Youth Minister of the Berkeley Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. M.T. Thompson, where he was also ordained in 1995.
He currently teaches at the Sacramento Bible College and Seminary – Stockton Extension, where he also received Teacher of the Year honor four years running. In 2003 he joined the teaching staff at Vision University International, where he has taught subjects such as Christian Ethics, Homiletics, and Contemporary Apologetics. He continues to be sought after for conferences and seminars.
Pastor Hunter’s ministry has been highlighted in the Oakland Tribune, Berkeley Tri-City Post, Oakland Post, Urban View, as well as National Public Radio. He has been the subject of two film documentaries: “The Reverend and the Loft King” and “Nehemiah”
Pastor Hunter has an inexhaustible thirst for knowledge. He has attended Biola University and received both his Bachelor of Theology from Sacramento Bible College and Seminary. He is currently a Master of Divinity candidate at the American Baptist Seminary of the West. Pastor Hunter’s goal is to give birth to every creative thought God has breathed into him before the Lord calls him home.
