African American Family Outreach Project – Health & Wellness Workshop
Alameda County Training & Education Center 125 12th Street, Oakland, CA, United StatesOn Saturday, November 10, 2018, the African American Family Outreach Project will host a special workshop from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm at the Alameda County Training & Education Center, 125 12th St., Suite 400, Oakland The free workshop series offers family members who seek support and care for those who are living with mental illness and/or addicted to drugs or alcohol with an opportunity to talk with several mental health professionals. Family members with lived experience say "when mental illness or substance abuse hit our loved ones, we did not know where to turn. In these workshops, we're actually able to talk with the managing psychiatrist for Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services and get answers! It's made a huge difference." Ample time will be provided for individuals to discuss symptoms, causes and medications with a psychiatrist; an expert in dealing with drug and alcohol problems and advice from experienced family members who are willing to help. St. Columba Catholic Church – Memorial Crosses Ceremony
St. Columba Catholic Church 6401 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, CA, United StatesBecause the crosses in front of Church represent homicides in Oakland year-to-date, we must respectfully remove the crosses on December 31 st so that we can begin again in January placing crosses in the Memorial for the New Year. Please come and join us in prayer for those who tragically died as the result of violence during this past year and show our support to those families who have experienced extreme grief from losing a loved one to homicide. The service is simple in structure: we gather in Church for some prayer and comments by some of those present. We then proceed to the front garden and the name and date of death of each victim is spoken aloud as that cross is removed from the Memorial and handed to the victim’s family, if present, or to any member of the congregation. When all of the crosses have been removed, we process back into Church and lay the crosses in front of the altar. Family members of the deceased who have received crosses may keep them as a remembrance of their loved one. The service ends with some concluding prayer.
