DESCRIPTION:ANITA HILL\, Saturday March 10\, 2018\, Oakland Marriott Hotel \n“Anita Hill changed the conversation on workplace bias and harassment…she unleashed a wave of women running for office.”  The SFChronicle\, April 2017. \nAn attorney and academic\, Anita Hill is a leading proponent for women’s rights\, workforce equity\, and feminism. The youngest of 13 children of Albert and Erma Hill\, Anita Hill hails from Arkansas family farmers\, her great-grandparents and her maternal grandfather\, born into slavery. Hill attended Oklahoma State University\, then Yale Law School where she graduated with honors and is now a University Professor of Social Policy\, Law\, and Women’s Studies at Brandeis University and a faculty member of Brandeis’ Heller School for Social Policy and Management. \nHill is the author of three books\, Speaking Truth to Power\, Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender\, Race\, and Finding Home and a tribute to Thurgood Marshall\, the first African American Supreme Court Justice who preceded Clarence Thomas\, titled A Tribute to Thurgood Marshall: A Man Who Broke with Tradition on Issues of Race and Gender. \nShe became an attorney-adviser to Clarence Thomas who served as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights\, then worked for Thomas when he became Chairman at the US EEOC.  Hill later openly testified in Senate Confirmation hearings to Thomas’ workforce sexual harassment history\, making her a national figure for women speaking truth to power on matters relating to workforce bias and fairness. \nComplimentary Admission\, RSVP Required. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joseph Evans\, President and Dean of Morehouse School of Religion\, will preach in Stewart Chapel on the San Francisco Theological Seminary Campus. \nDr. Joseph Evans is the Dean of the Morehouse School of Religion\, associate professor of Homiletics at the Interdenominational Theological Center and author of Lifting the Veil Over Eurocentrism: The Du Boisian Hermeneutic of Double Consciousness published by Africa World Press (2014). His newest book’s working title is Reconciliation and Reparation: Preaching Economic Justice in the African American Church is expected by Judson Press (Spring 2018).  In addition\, Dean Evans is the author of numerous scholarly articles that include “The Radical Nature of the Du Boisian Metanarrative and Economic Reparations” in the Homiletic (Spring 2016) and “Vernon Johns and the Romance With Death” in the American Baptist Quarterly (February 2017). Gardner Taylor once described Evans as one of the “brilliant preachers of his generation.”

DESCRIPTION:Lincoln Training Institute is excited to announce that Tim Wise\, prominent anti-racist essayist and educator\, will provide an opportunity to examine what it means to be white in a nation created for the benefit of those who are “white like him\,” and how privilege seeps into every institutional arrangement\, from education to employment to the justice system. \nTim Wise\, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls\, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown\,” is among the nation’s most prominent anti-racist essayists and educators. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states\, on over 1000 college and high school campuses\, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences\, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda\, and has trained corporate\, government\, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. \nWise’s antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s\, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation\, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time\, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. \nFrom there\, he became a community organizer in New Orleans’ public housing\, and a policy analyst for a children’s advocacy group focused on combating poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work\, in Northampton\, MA.\, and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville\, TN. \nWise is the author of seven books\, including his highly-acclaimed memoir\, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son\, as well as Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority\, and his latest\, Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor\, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America. He has contributed chapters or essays to over 25 additional books and his writings are taught in colleges and universities across the nation. DESCRIPTION:Social Security is alive and well now\, but just like Medicaid and Medicare\, Social Security is under attack. We must defend it. Join us on Social Security’s 82 birthday to celebrate it\, and re-dedicate ourselves to defend and improve Social Security and all these vital programs. \nMonday\, August 14\, 12 Noon\, in Oakland’s Frank Ogawa Plaza\nBroadway and 14th St\, 12th St BART Station. \nRally and Two-Block March to Federal Building \nConfirmed Speakers to date: \n\nAlex Lawson: Executive Director\, Social Security Works\nNorman Solomon: Author\, Columnist\, Activist\n\nOver its 82 years\, Social Security has provided income and dignity for hundreds of millions of retirees and people with disabilities\, their spouses and children\, and for deceased workers’ spouses and children. For two thirds of seniors\, it’s over half their income. Half of women and people with disabilities would be in poverty without Social Security. Almost 10% of children get it. We will NOT go back to the days of workhouses! \nSocial Security is the nation’s most effective anti-poverty program\, yet it is entirely funded by we who work for a living\, through FICA deductions from our paychecks\, and by our employers. Not a cent comes from the government. In fact\, our $2.8 Trillion Social Security Trust Fund is invested in loans to help the government run. Those loans must be repaid to Social Security. It’s our program\, our money! Our past\, our future! \nFor years\, the same corporate and financial vultures who eliminated defined-benefit employee pensions have also tried to destroy Social Security. Their hedge-fund crooks like Peter Peterson put out fake studies to undermine people’s faith in Social Security. Their official Commissions\, like Bowles/Simpson recommend: Raising the Retirement age. Cutting benefits and cost-of-living increases. Worst of all\, turning Social Security into private individual accounts for each recipient\, invested in risky Wall Street stock market accounts with expensive management fees. Instead of having a unified program of collectively-guaranteed economic security for everyone\, we’d be individuals at the mercy of Wall Street’s insider trading and boom-and-bust whims. \nNow\, the Trump administration wants to eliminate the payroll tax\, which is the financial foundation of Social Security. And Trump’s 2018 budget calls for $64 Billion in cuts over the next ten years to Social Security Disability Insurance\, an integral part of Social Security. Most of these “savings” would come from reduced future enrollment because of new work requirements. \nWe have a different plan: Scrap the $127\,000 cap and make the rich pay Social Security tax on all their income. Raise benefits to cover actual cost of living and disappearing pensions. Enact a realistic cost-of-living formula. Provide benefits for time caring for young children. Restore student benefits for children of deceased or disabled covered parents. \nWe must remember that our parents\, grandparents\, and great-grandparents won Social Security in the mid-1930s\, the depths of the Great Depression\, when everything looked stacked against us. Social Security must be preserved\, improved\, and expanded. In the 1930s\, Roosevelt said “Make me do it!” We did. We can do it again.
