SUMMARY:Healing Black Lives - Online Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for HEALING BLACK LIVES\, a day of healing specifically for people of the African diaspora. In this time of physical distancing\, we are offering a modified retreat via Zoom’s online video platform. \nDuring these tumultuous times\, many of us are bombarded with images and reports that Black community will be most heavily impacted by this current public health threat which is perpetuated by structural racism\, classism and other marginalization. We know that as tides rise\, it is often Black folks that suffer the greatest consequences. Witnessing the current impact on ourselves\, our loved ones\, and communities carries physical and spiritual weight. \nGather in sacred (virtual) community affirming that OUR BLACK LIVES MATTER. \nFacilitated by: Rev. Kamal Hassan & Xan West\, the retreat includes: \n\nPractices for sustainability\, resilience\, and spiritual well-being\nCommunity connection and support\nFinding strength in ourselves and one another\nSharing hopes and visions\n\nPREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED so we can send you the information to securely access Zoom. Tuition is sliding scale with scholarships available and no one ever turned away for lack of funds. \nClick to register: bit.ly/healingblacklives

SUMMARY:Earth Day 2020: Black\, Green & Traumatized
DESCRIPTION:Environmental trauma has lasting and catastrophic impacts on our community. To address this reality\, the Center for Food Faith and Justice has joined forces with Green The Church\, Seeds for Peace and the Black Church Food Security Network on Earth Day April 22nd @ 3pm PT/6pm ET\, to host a “Black\, Green & Traumatized” webinar. \nAll are impacted by COVID-19\, but not equally. The facts are that African Americans are dying at higher rates from this deadly virus than other races. Largely because Black communities face a disproportionate burden of environmental toxins because of where they live\, work and worship.  African Americans often appear marginalized in a system that values the natural world while devaluing Black and Brown bodies as part of the created order. This discussion will address the intersection of environmental justice and mental health in the African American community and solutions toward avenues of equity in this era of COVID-19 and climate justice. \nRegister Today: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_xAL8ZFbBSEuh8kVKMULxjg

SUMMARY:Earth Day Webinar: When White Folks Catch A Cold - A Black Church Huddle on Health & Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has pulled back the covers on the layers of environmental injustice that confront the African American community. In many cities across the country\, Black people have the highest rates of coronavirus infection\, are being forced into health hazards on the job\, and are experiencing price gouging at the market and long lines for free groceries. These scenarios are not new\, but how they relate to environmental justice is not always clear. \nJoin members of the Black Church community on Wednesday\, April 22\, 2020 – Earth Day – for a conversation designed to inform and ignite action to address the current and coming challenges facing the African American community. \nFeaturing: \n\nSha’Von Terrell\, MCRP\nDr. John Kinney\nDr. LaShauna Austria\nRev. SUMMARY:Not Our Daughters Benefit Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking continues to be one of the major human right abuses today. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline\, in 2018 California has the most reported human trafficking cases in the United States. The 3rd Human Trafficking in San Francisco Report noted that most individuals recruited in California had their initial trafficking experience in San Francisco or Alameda County. Human trafficking is not a victimless crime. \nThe Baptist Ministers Union of Oakland Women’s Ministry recognizes that it takes a village to eradicate this abuse of human dignity and well-being. On Saturday\, April 27\, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. the BMU Women’s Ministry will host “Not our Daughter” Brunch. We are taking a stand against human trafficking while reclaiming\, revitalizing and restoring our sisters. During the brunch there will be a special screening of Surviving International Boulevard. A documentary by filmmaker Sian Gowen which reveals the complex reality of domestic child sex trafficking through the experiences of two local women from Oakland\, California. Many other exciting activities are planned for this special event. \nFunds from ticket sales will assist several local organizations that are working with survivors of human trafficking. These organizations include ROYLS\, INC founded by Virginia Arnold and Jamar Kirton and Serenity House which was founded by the late Johnnia Davis. Both organizations rely on private donations to provide the services available to young women and men. \nTickets: $50 | Link

SUMMARY:Karter's 1st Annual Special Needs Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 23rd we are hosting our very 1st Annual Special Needs Fashion Show at the Emeryville Center for Community Life ECCL from 1-4pm! \nThis is a free event\, I just want to show our community the greatness in these babies and educate what these disabilities look like and ultimately offer a fresh approach to Inclusion! \nKarter is four\, has a wheelchair and was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Over his four years\, we have unfolded and become a support platform for local families. We are showing what it is to live boldly and confidently even in our position. \nThis was the birth of the Let Me Be Great Foundation\, our disability awareness nonprofit. \nI made up in my mind that as long as my baby would fight\, I would fight. I would be his first advocate and I would see to it that he would be able to be his best self and Great in society at that. These special needs children have our love but need the support of the community just like every other group speaking out. \nFor more info\, visit: https://www.facebook.com/TLMBGF/
