SUMMARY:Not Our Daughters Benefit Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking continues to be one of the major human right abuses today. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline\, in 2018 California has the most reported human trafficking cases in the United States. The 3rd Human Trafficking in San Francisco Report noted that most individuals recruited in California had their initial trafficking experience in San Francisco or Alameda County. Human trafficking is not a victimless crime. \nThe Baptist Ministers Union of Oakland Women’s Ministry recognizes that it takes a village to eradicate this abuse of human dignity and well-being. On Saturday\, April 27\, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. the BMU Women’s Ministry will host “Not our Daughter” Brunch. We are taking a stand against human trafficking while reclaiming\, revitalizing and restoring our sisters. During the brunch there will be a special screening of Surviving International Boulevard. A documentary by filmmaker Sian Gowen which reveals the complex reality of domestic child sex trafficking through the experiences of two local women from Oakland\, California. Many other exciting activities are planned for this special event. \nFunds from ticket sales will assist several local organizations that are working with survivors of human trafficking. These organizations include ROYLS\, INC founded by Virginia Arnold and Jamar Kirton and Serenity House which was founded by the late Johnnia Davis. Both organizations rely on private donations to provide the services available to young women and men. \nTickets: $50 | Link

SUMMARY:Karter's 1st Annual Special Needs Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 23rd we are hosting our very 1st Annual Special Needs Fashion Show at the Emeryville Center for Community Life ECCL from 1-4pm! \nThis is a free event\, I just want to show our community the greatness in these babies and educate what these disabilities look like and ultimately offer a fresh approach to Inclusion! \nKarter is four\, has a wheelchair and was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Over his four years\, we have unfolded and become a support platform for local families. We are showing what it is to live boldly and confidently even in our position. \nThis was the birth of the Let Me Be Great Foundation\, our disability awareness nonprofit. \nI made up in my mind that as long as my baby would fight\, I would fight. I would be his first advocate and I would see to it that he would be able to be his best self and Great in society at that. These special needs children have our love but need the support of the community just like every other group speaking out. \nFor more info\, visit: https://www.facebook.com/TLMBGF/

SUMMARY:18th Annual Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:18th annual Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival\nSaturday\, May 19\, 2018 San Antonio Park\nNoon-7pm FREE \nAs we all gather together at this annual festival to regroup\, to build\, to feed our souls\, and to acquire knowledge we embrace the theme for this year’s festival: A cultural reconstruction for third world self-determination. * \nAs a Third World organization we understand that the key path to justice\, democracy and equality in the U.S. is based on the struggle for Black & Brown unity. Our strength then must connect with liberation struggles in Mexico/ Latin America and the African Diaspora. This is what Malcolm X understood and advocated when he spoke of the Third World nations and peoples. \nWe call for Black & Brown unity as a pivotal force for self-determination especially in these mad times of a resurgent white supremacist offensive. Black & Brown unity not only in our neighborhoods but also across the globe to reconnect our lives\, our struggles\, our cultures with Mexico\, Latin America and the African Diaspora… To strengthen our historic ties and collective memories… our art and music\, we need a new cultural consciousness to reconstruct a demented social order and to wake up America. \n*CULTURAL RECONSTRUCTION: To rebuild and reclaim revolutionary Third World consciousness\, values\, memory and traditions of struggle and creativity to make a just\, righteous and egalitarian society. \nAs always we are celebrating jazz and it’s roots and future in Black communities. The line up features some of the best and the brightest; the most promising; the legendary; some new on the scene; some who have years of knowledge and grace… \nJazz Stage:\nFederick Douglass Youth Ensemble of the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music (OPC)\nTahree Amir\nJennifer Johns\nHoward Wiley Quartet \nKatherine Dunham Dance Stage:\nGirl Project\nDana Fitchett\nChris Babingui\nSambaFunk! SUMMARY:Righteous Resistance Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join PICO California for the 2018 Righteous Resistance Symposium\, May 18-19th. \n\nFriday begins at 6pm with FELLOWSHIP + LIVE CONCERT with Sol Development! Gather to celebrate and heal\, across RACE + FAITH + DIFFERENCE. Amazing music with amazing people.\nSaturday begins at 8am with LEARNING + PANELS + BREAKOUTS for skill building around responding to state violence\, racist attacks\, ice raids and organizing through poor peoples campaign\, digital organizing\, and electoral work. It’s FREE\, but we need you to register!\n\nWe face a current political and social climate that continues to belie black humanity – where\, without impunity\, a young black man can be followed into his grandmother’s backyard and shot in the back six times out of the 20 shots fired at him. \nWill we stand on the sideline or will we join the important struggle that Black Americans & many others daily endure to live free from racism\, violence & terror? \nWe believe we are called to lean into a ministry and theology of resistance\, reclaiming the hope and power inherent in our prophetic faiths\, giving us courage and healing for the days ahead. \nThere are many different ways that your congregation and community can enter into solidarity with us. \nThere will be a time of celebration and fellowship\, and training around resisting State Violence\, ICE Raids\, 2018 Election\, Digital Organizing\, and the Poor Peoples Campaign Workshops. \nWe are inviting you to wrestle with the principalities and powers that manifest themselves in racial prejudice\, systemic evil and violence\, and religious apathy and complicity. \nWe need you here; it is our duty to fight for freedom! \nRegister today! Space is Limited. \n(En Espanol Translation provided) \n(Childcare and Food provided)
