SUMMARY:Borders and Identity: Earl and Boswell Lectures 2017
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a two-day conference on “Borders & Identity” addressing the critical theological\, pastoral and social issues of our day. \nMigration across all kinds of borders—both physical and metaphorical—is reshaping our understanding of identity across boundaries of race\, culture\, religion\, sexuality\, gender\, and nationality. It has been a major\, and divisive\, theme of national politics. \nHalfway through the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency\, join us for an engaging weekend of workshops\, worship\, direct action\, and community building. The conference will emphasize practical skills\, timely resources\, and a deeper analysis of the critical issues facing us at this moment. Our goal is to equip leaders to stand for justice with all those on the margins and borders. \nThis event is being held in conjunction with Pacific School of Religion’s Alumni/ae Reunion Weekend. Under the theme of “Borders and Identity\,” the Earl Lectures presented in partnership with our Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion‘s Boswell Lecture. For more than a hundred years\, Pacific School of Religion (PSR) has hosted the Earl Lectures and Leadership Conference. \n \n  \n  \nThe keynote address will be delivered by Jose Antonio Vargas\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist\, filmmaker\, immigration activist\, and founder of Define American. Jose Antonio Vargas’ keynote address is free of charge to the public\, made possible by the Earl and Boswell endowments. Seating is limited\, however\, so please register below. \n  \n  \n \n  \nRegistration is available online: https://psr.edu/earl-17/ \nThanks to our partnering organizations: Define American\, Council of Elders West\, Church World Service\, and Auburn Seminary. \nPlease see here for information about sponsorship opportunities. \nIt is our sincere hope to accommodate all attendees. Please contact us directly at communications@psr.edu or 510/849-8222 if you have accessibility concerns. \nOne CEU unit (10 hours) is available for attending the full conference\, at an additional charge of $40. \nA limited number of partial conference registration scholarships are available. Please email wscott@psr.edu for further information.

SUMMARY:32nd Annual Empowering Womxn of Color Conference
DESCRIPTION:2017 Empowering Women of Color Conference | Unbound and Unboxed: Owning\, Asserting\, and Uplifting our Whole Selves \nKeynote Speaker: Ericka Huggins\nClosing Speaker: Fatima Asghar\n“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” – Audre Lorde\nThe 32nd Annual Empowering Womxn of Color Conference\, “Unbound and Unboxed: Owning\, Asserting\, and Uplifting our Whole Selves” is designed to answer the call for collective healing issued by the ongoing state of racial\, political\, environmental\, and economic trauma. Through the legacy of Shirley Chisholm\, the first black congresswoman and first woman to run for president\, we know that “women in this country must become revolutionaries…and so we must prepare ourselves educationally\, economically\, and psychologically.” In her trailblazing 1970 presidential campaign\, Shirley Chisholm stood “unbought and unbossed.” At the 2017 Empowering Women of Color Conference we stand united; unbound and unboxed.\n \nThis year’s theme speaks to the need for collective care and affirmation as a means of preparation\, preservation\, and resistance. Now more than ever\, womxn of color can no longer afford to neglect ourselves while on the frontlines of global battles against social injustice. We must nurture and free ourselves from the limits and labels imposed on us\, so that we may move effectively on the path to liberation.\n \nThis year we aim to provide a space where womxn of color can come together to hear one another as we explore new imaginings of freedom and well-being. Through a series of innovative workshops\, radical healing spaces\, a panel discussion\, and speakers\, we will explore how we as womxn of color can preserve ourselves and our communities as we work towards changing the world. As we proudly celebrate 32 years of the Empowering Womxn of Color Conference\, we invite people of all ages\, abilities\, socioeconomic backgrounds\, immigration statuses\, gender identities\, sexual orientations\, nationalities\, religions\, and cultural backgrounds to use this as a safe-space for discussion\, community building\, and healing. \n  \nRegister today http://bit.ly/2lf3ZsL

Woodson founded the celebration he called “Negro History Week” in 1926. Dr. Woodson selected the second week of February for the celebration because it fell between the birthdays of the famed orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. In 1976\, the celebration expanded to include the entire month of February. Today\, Black History Month is celebrated across the United States by people of all ethnic and social backgrounds. At Pacific\, it is observed during a monthlong celebration in February organized by Pacific’s Black History Month Planning Committee.

It just needs to be good.” On Feb. 10\, 2017\, he will provide some of that good music and provide a lecture revealing how he has overcome the challenges in his life and is impacting an entire generation-building community one person at a time.
