SUMMARY:St. Columba Catholic Church – Memorial Crosses Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, St. Columba Church commemorates Oakland’s victims of homicide by placing a cross with the victim’s name in the front garden of the Church. We then come together each New Year’s Eve to remember those who have died and to remove the crosses. \nPlease join us in prayer for those who tragically lost their lives as a result of violence during this past year and to show our love and support fo the family and friends who have experienced the grief of losing one to homicide. The Service can also be watched online via Zoom: \nJoin the Ceremony\npassword: 1898 \nWe gather in the Church for some prayer and comments. We then proceed to the front garden for the Ceremony of the Crosses where the victims’ names will be read aloud and the crosses removed. When all the crosses have been removed\, we proceed back into the church and lay the crosses at the foot of the altar. Family members of the deceased who have received crosses may keep them as a remembrance of their loved one. \nThe ceremony concludes with a prayer. \n

DESCRIPTION:Because the crosses in front of Church represent homicides in Oakland year-to-date\, we must respectfully remove the crosses on December 31 st so that we can begin again in January placing crosses in the Memorial for the New Year. \nPlease come and join us in prayer for those who tragically died as the result of violence during this past year and show our support to those families who have experienced extreme grief from losing a loved one to homicide. \nThe service is simple in structure: we gather in Church for some prayer and comments by some of those present.  We then proceed to the front garden and the name and date of death of each victim is spoken aloud as that cross is removed from the Memorial and handed to the victim’s family\, if present\, or to any member of the congregation.  When all of the crosses have been removed\, we process back into Church and lay the crosses in front of the altar.  Family members of the deceased who have received crosses may keep them as a remembrance of their loved one.  The service ends with some concluding prayer. \nPlease join us for this important and powerful expression of St. Columba’s compassion for the victims of violence in our City. \nhttps://www.stcolumba-oak.com

This joint service will be shared by seven Bay Area UCC churches in the area: \nArlington Community Church\nCity of Refuge UCC\nFirst Congregational Church of Alameda\nFirst Congregational Church of Berkeley\nFirst Congregational Church of Oakland\nMira Vista UCC\nSycamore UCC \nThe service will include scripture readings about that time\, singing and silence. \nAlso\, the Sanctuary will be open all day on Good Friday\, from 7 am to 5:30 pm. Come and sit in the silence at anytime during the day for as long as you choose. At the top of each hour\, there will be a brief time of music\, prayer and scripture. Someone will also be present throughout the day to pray with you if you choose.
