DESCRIPTION:On Good Friday\, April 19 at 7 pm\, we commemorate the day that Jesus was crucified with a candlelight service in the Sanctuary. This joint service will be shared by seven Bay Area UCC churches in the area: \nArlington Community Church\nCity of Refuge UCC\nFirst Congregational Church of Alameda\nFirst Congregational Church of Berkeley\nFirst Congregational Church of Oakland\nMira Vista UCC\nSycamore UCC \nThe service will include scripture readings about that time\, singing and silence. \nAlso\, the Sanctuary will be open all day on Good Friday\, from 7 am to 5:30 pm. Come and sit in the silence at anytime during the day for as long as you choose. At the top of each hour\, there will be a brief time of music\, prayer and scripture. Someone will also be present throughout the day to pray with you if you choose.

SUMMARY:St. Columba Catholic Church - Memorial Crosses Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Because the crosses in front of Church represent homicides in Oakland year-to-date\, we must respectfully remove the crosses on December 31 st so that we can begin again in January placing crosses in the Memorial for the New Year. \nPlease come and join us in prayer for those who tragically died as the result of violence during this past year and show our support to those families who have experienced extreme grief from losing a loved one to homicide. \nThe service is simple in structure: we gather in Church for some prayer and comments by some of those present.  We then proceed to the front garden and the name and date of death of each victim is spoken aloud as that cross is removed from the Memorial and handed to the victim’s family\, if present\, or to any member of the congregation.  When all of the crosses have been removed\, we process back into Church and lay the crosses in front of the altar.  Family members of the deceased who have received crosses may keep them as a remembrance of their loved one.  The service ends with some concluding prayer. \nPlease join us for this important and powerful expression of St. Columba’s compassion for the victims of violence in our City.

DESCRIPTION:San Francisco’s grandest Easter morning tradition gets under way at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday\, April 1\, 2018: the annual Sunrise Service at Mount Davidson Cross. This year’s citywide celebration atop the City’s highest peak marks the 96th anniversary of the event. \nLocal clergy presiding at the non-denominational service at the foot of America’s largest cross include Rev. Jeff Mammen of New Life Church\, Rev. Mesrob Ash of St. John Armenian Apostolic Church\, Rev. Dr. Tim Svoboda of Youth With A Mission City Ministries\, Pastor Alex Cabansagan of Family Christian Fellowship\, and Rev. Gary Peters of Bay Church\, who will deliver the Easter message. The program will also feature community leaders and special music\, including Lynne Miller of The House of Bagpipes. Admission is free. \nSituated at the summit of Mt. Davidson (elevation 938 ft.)\, the historic 103-foot-tall cross will be illuminated by spotlights throughout Saturday evening March 31\, shining as a beacon for Easter morning pilgrims (Note: great location shot at the corner of Robinhood Way and Lansdale Avenue on Saturday night). \nSpecial bus service on Muni’s 36 line begins at 5:30 a.m. and runs every 15 minutes from Forest Hill Station to the park gate located at the intersection of Lansdale Avenue\, Myra Drive and Dalewood Way – two blocks south of Portola Drive. The trail beginning at the park entrance across from 39 Dalewood Way affords the easiest route to the top. \nSponsored by local churches and broadcast nationally in years past\, the Easter Sunrise Service attendance record was set during World War II\, with an estimated 50\,000 worshippers in attendance. \nOriginally dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a transcontinental ceremony in 1934\, the 103-foot-tall Mt. Davidson Cross has been restored by the Council of Armenian-American Organizations of Northern California\, owners of the monument. \nWith the sun rising over the East Bay hills\, Mt. Davidson Park’s beautiful forest setting serves as a spectacular backdrop for this cherished Easter event.
