First Congregational Church & City of Refuge UCC – Ash Wednesday Service

First Congregational Church of Oakland 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA, United States

“Ash Wednesday” is a day often observed in quiet contemplation and preparation for the time of Lent. Lent is a time of preparation and observation of Resurrection Sunday, commercially referred to as “Easter.” By observing the 40 days of Lent, we acknowledge and try to replicate Christs' sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent can be observed by fasting, both from food and various activities or ways of behaving. Join us on Wednesday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Oakland in observance of Ash Wednesday.  See the flyer included for more details. If you get time, read or listen to this passage (Isaiah 58:1-12).  It kind of breaks down Isaiah’s understanding of the spiritual practice of fasting: dedication to the work of justice and restoration. Peace & love, Lay Pastor Marilyn
