SUMMARY:Borders and Identity: Earl and Boswell Lectures 2017
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a two-day conference on “Borders & Identity” addressing the critical theological\, pastoral and social issues of our day. \nMigration across all kinds of borders—both physical and metaphorical—is reshaping our understanding of identity across boundaries of race\, culture\, religion\, sexuality\, gender\, and nationality. It has been a major\, and divisive\, theme of national politics. \nHalfway through the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency\, join us for an engaging weekend of workshops\, worship\, direct action\, and community building. The conference will emphasize practical skills\, timely resources\, and a deeper analysis of the critical issues facing us at this moment. Our goal is to equip leaders to stand for justice with all those on the margins and borders. \nThis event is being held in conjunction with Pacific School of Religion’s Alumni/ae Reunion Weekend. Under the theme of “Borders and Identity\,” the Earl Lectures presented in partnership with our Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion‘s Boswell Lecture. For more than a hundred years\, Pacific School of Religion (PSR) has hosted the Earl Lectures and Leadership Conference. \n \n  \n  \nThe keynote address will be delivered by Jose Antonio Vargas\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist\, filmmaker\, immigration activist\, and founder of Define American. Jose Antonio Vargas’ keynote address is free of charge to the public\, made possible by the Earl and Boswell endowments. Seating is limited\, however\, so please register below. \n  \n  \n \n  \nRegistration is available online: https://psr.edu/earl-17/ \nThanks to our partnering organizations: Define American\, Council of Elders West\, Church World Service\, and Auburn Seminary. \nPlease see here for information about sponsorship opportunities. \nIt is our sincere hope to accommodate all attendees. Please contact us directly at communications@psr.edu or 510/849-8222 if you have accessibility concerns. \nOne CEU unit (10 hours) is available for attending the full conference\, at an additional charge of $40. \nA limited number of partial conference registration scholarships are available. Please email wscott@psr.edu for further information.

SUMMARY:32nd Annual Empowering Womxn of Color Conference
DESCRIPTION:2017 Empowering Women of Color Conference | Unbound and Unboxed: Owning\, Asserting\, and Uplifting our Whole Selves \nKeynote Speaker: Ericka Huggins\nClosing Speaker: Fatima Asghar\n“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” – Audre Lorde\nThe 32nd Annual Empowering Womxn of Color Conference\, “Unbound and Unboxed: Owning\, Asserting\, and Uplifting our Whole Selves” is designed to answer the call for collective healing issued by the ongoing state of racial\, political\, environmental\, and economic trauma. Through the legacy of Shirley Chisholm\, the first black congresswoman and first woman to run for president\, we know that “women in this country must become revolutionaries…and so we must prepare ourselves educationally\, economically\, and psychologically.” In her trailblazing 1970 presidential campaign\, Shirley Chisholm stood “unbought and unbossed.” At the 2017 Empowering Women of Color Conference we stand united; unbound and unboxed.\n \nThis year’s theme speaks to the need for collective care and affirmation as a means of preparation\, preservation\, and resistance. Now more than ever\, womxn of color can no longer afford to neglect ourselves while on the frontlines of global battles against social injustice. We must nurture and free ourselves from the limits and labels imposed on us\, so that we may move effectively on the path to liberation.\n \nThis year we aim to provide a space where womxn of color can come together to hear one another as we explore new imaginings of freedom and well-being. Through a series of innovative workshops\, radical healing spaces\, a panel discussion\, and speakers\, we will explore how we as womxn of color can preserve ourselves and our communities as we work towards changing the world. As we proudly celebrate 32 years of the Empowering Womxn of Color Conference\, we invite people of all ages\, abilities\, socioeconomic backgrounds\, immigration statuses\, gender identities\, sexual orientations\, nationalities\, religions\, and cultural backgrounds to use this as a safe-space for discussion\, community building\, and healing. \n  \nRegister today http://bit.ly/2lf3ZsL

SUMMARY:From Labor to Reward: An Evening with Martha C. Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Join author Rev. Dr. Martha C. Taylor – who has served as both SFTS and GTU adjunct professor — for an evening discussing her newest book\, From Labor to Reward. \nThursday\, February 23\, 2017 | 7PM – 8:30 PM \nSan Francisco Theological Seminary\n101 Seminary Road\nScott Hall room 101\nSan Anselmo\, CA 94960\nCOMPLIMENTARY ADMISSION – REGISTER ONLINE \nThis groundbreaking book fills a huge void in American religious history\, black religious history\, and traditions of the black church. Until now\, no other book has chronicled the rich religious experiences of black church beginnings in the Bay Area. Martha C. Taylor provides penetrating insight into the early makings of the black church in the Bay Area. With attention to detail\, Taylor captures the joys\, frustrations\, and unity of black people who left the segregated Deep South\, came to the Bay Area seeking freedom only to face similar adversities of segregation\, racism\, housing discrimination\, KKK threats of violence\, and other socio-political barriers. Remarkably\, these early pioneers brought their culture\, traditions\, and experiences from the South and built a strong vibrant religious community. From Labor to Reward speaks for the legacy of African Americans who were gospel social activists using the church as the anchor. Multiple sources of research and interviews were gathered from church records\, newspaper clippings\, and other written sources to tell this unknown story. \nRev. Dr. Martha C. Taylor is the Historian for the Progressive National Baptist Convention\, Inc. and church historian for the historic Allen Temple Baptist Church\, Oakland\, California. She has served as adjunct professor for the San Francisco Theological Seminary\, Graduate Theological Union\, Berkeley\, Doctor of Ministry and Masters of Divinity programs. Taylor is dually ordained as an American Baptist and Presbyterian Minister. She resides in Oakland\, California.

SUMMARY:Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir - Black History Month Celebration
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Black History Month\, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir pays homage to traditional spirituals and black gospel music\, under the direction of Terrance Kelly. The choir will be joined by Henrietta Davis\, Jackie Tolbert\, and the McGuillicutty sisters and will be honoring bay area legends The Oakland Gospelettes. \nThe Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir delivers good news – the power and glory of 55 talented singers blending their voices together in rapturous harmony on gospel standards\, traditional spirituals\, and their own original praise songs. The East Bay Express has described the harmonies on their most recent album\, Hear My Prayer\, as “absolutely divine\,” and the live version\, with the vibrations of all those gorgeous voices filling the Freight\, is even more inspiring. \nThe OIGC grew out of a gospel music workshop at Jazz Camp West in 1986. Terrance Kelly led the workshop and has served as artistic director of the choir ever since.
