African American Family Outreach Project – Health & Wellness Workshop
Alameda County Training & Education Center 125 12th Street, Oakland, CA, United StatesOn Saturday, November 10, 2018, the African American Family Outreach Project will host a special workshop from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm at the Alameda County Training & Education Center, 125 12th St., Suite 400, Oakland The free workshop series offers family members who seek support and care for those who are living with mental illness and/or addicted to drugs or alcohol with an opportunity to talk with several mental health professionals. Family members with lived experience say "when mental illness or substance abuse hit our loved ones, we did not know where to turn. In these workshops, we're actually able to talk with the managing psychiatrist for Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services and get answers! It's made a huge difference." Ample time will be provided for individuals to discuss symptoms, causes and medications with a psychiatrist; an expert in dealing with drug and alcohol problems and advice from experienced family members who are willing to help. Mental Health 101 for Clergy

We've been hearing from clergy in District 5 that they're being asked more frequently to assist congregants with mental health issues and don't feel adequately trained to assist or know where to refer people who need professional help. This will be an introduction to early signs and symptoms of mental illness experienced by individuals as well as the impact of complex trauma on the lives of individuals, families, and communities. All denominations are welcome and encouraged to attend.
