St. John Coltrane Church – Christmas Eve Jazz Mass

Join us for a gala Christmas Eve celebration of candlelight, favorite songs, authentic spiritual practice, and Jazz presented by St. Cyprian’s and the St. John Coltrane AOC. This promises to be a memorable evening of music, joy, and memories. Frederick Harris will be at the Jazz Piano backed by musicians from St. John Coltrane Church. Clergy from both congregations will join in leading the Christmas Eve celebration.

About our Pianist

Frederick Harris has done extensive work as concert and jazz pianist, drummer, music director, educator and coach in S.F. bay area for over 30 years. He has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Higgins, Charlie Haden, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Rebecca Parris, Kurt Elling, Billy Hart, Regina Carter, among others, and has given recitals and master classes in Arizona and Portland (OR) sponsored by Sherman Clay/Steinway & Sons.
As an educator, Frederick has taught music privately and in a wide range of institutions for more than 20 years, including San Jose State University, Stanford University, Cal Performances at UC Berkeley, and various schools within the San Francisco Unified and Oakland Unified School Districts. He also was the pianist/Minister of Music of the St. John Coltrane African Orthodox Church for 20 years. He is currently a professor at City College of San Francisco, and also teaches privately. Frederick holds B.M. and M.M. degrees in Piano Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
