Kiss the days of “church punch” in a styrofoam cup goodbye! Just weeks after Earth Day, a nationally celebrated day to encourage acts of recycling and reuse – the Allen Temple Baptist Church has made a bold step in declaring as of June 1st the congregation will be a styrofoam free campus.
A recent announcement to members and the community read –
Effective June 1, Allen Temple will be a Styrofoam free campus; for the safety of our members, visitors, and our environment, Styrofoam plates, cups, bowls, and carry-out containers are not permitted to be brought onto our campus. We are aware of the dangers associated with Styrofoam products, and have made a conscious decision to protect the health of our members and visitors as much as possible by adopting this policy, which eliminates these inexpensive drinking cups, food containers, and utensils that are hazardous to both our health and the environment. Scientific tests have shown when hot foods or liquids come into contact with Styrofoam, the Styrofoam starts to break down and causes toxins to be absorbed into the bloodstream and tissues. It is also not biodegradable, so it can take 500 years to decompose.
Under the pastoral leadership of Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Jr., Allen Temple Baptist Church continues to chart new territory as a 21st century congregation. In 1999, the campus was expanded to include a 64,000 square foot Family Life Center – which houses a number of its social services including meeting and facility space for community use.
It’s pretty nice to see a congregation put Psalm 24:1 into action!
