Earlier today the family of Dr. Edwin Hawkins released an official statement requesting prayers on his behalf. It’s no secret recent health challenges have prevented the Grammy award winning Gospel legend from extensive travel and appearances.
Through it all he has remained in good spirits, even performing last month in The San Francisco Symphony’s 2017 Holiday Soul Concert. The 2-day engagement along with The Edwin Hawkins Singers, also included CeCe Winans. Last year he was noticeably absent for the first time from the 2017 Edwin Hawkins & Walter Hawkins Music & Arts Love Fellowship Conference, which he founded in 1979.
The international figure is one of Gospel’s most unsung, and under appreciated artists of his time. His humbleness, and endearing personality has remained consistent throughout the years. He is a songwriters favorite songwriter, but also a champion and supporter of gospel artists. You may not see him walking red carpets, but you can rest assured he’s somewhere encouraging the Gospel community to never give up, and to keep their eyes focused on God.
Regarded as the Father of Contemporary Gospel, Edwin has both penned and performed timeless classics that continue to stand the test of time.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of his rearranged classic, Oh Happy Day. More importantly, it also marks his 75th birthday to come in August.
He has given us so much. So very much.
Our prayers are with Dr. Hawkins and his entire family
