Mental Health 101 for Clergy

First Congregational Church of Oakland 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA, United States

Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson presents - Mental Health 101 for Clergy. We've been hearing from clergy in District 5 that they're being asked more frequently to assist congregants with mental health issues and don't feel adequately trained to assist or know where to refer people who need professional help. This will be an introduction to early signs and symptoms of mental illness experienced by individuals as well as the impact of complex trauma on the lives of individuals, families, and communities. All denominations are welcome and encouraged to attend. First Congregational Church & City of Refuge UCC – Ash Wednesday Service

First Congregational Church of Oakland 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA, United States

“Ash Wednesday” is a day often observed in quiet contemplation and preparation for the time of Lent. Lent is a time of preparation and observation of Resurrection Sunday, commercially referred to as “Easter.” By observing the 40 days of Lent, we acknowledge and try to replicate Christs' sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent can be observed by fasting, both from food and various activities or ways of behaving. Join us on Wednesday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Oakland in observance of Ash Wednesday.  See the flyer included for more details. If you get time, read or listen to this passage (Isaiah 58:1-12).  It kind of breaks down Isaiah’s understanding of the spiritual practice of fasting: dedication to the work of justice and restoration. Peace & love, Lay Pastor Marilyn

Righteous Resistance Symposium

First Congregational Church of Oakland 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA, United States

Join PICO California for the 2018 Righteous Resistance Symposium, May 18-19th. Friday begins at 6pm with FELLOWSHIP + LIVE CONCERT with Sol Development! Gather to celebrate and heal, across RACE + FAITH + DIFFERENCE. Amazing music with amazing people. Saturday begins at 8am with LEARNING + PANELS + BREAKOUTS for skill building around responding to state violence, racist attacks, ice raids and organizing through poor peoples campaign, digital organizing, and electoral work. It's FREE, but we need you to register! We face a current political and social climate that continues to belie black humanity - where, without impunity, a young black man can be followed into his grandmother's backyard and shot in the back six times out of the 20 shots fired at him. Will we stand on the sideline or will we join the important struggle that Black Americans & many others daily endure to live free from racism, violence & terror? We believe we are called to lean into a ministry and theology of resistance, reclaiming the hope and power inherent in our prophetic faiths, giving us courage and healing for the days ahead. There are many different ways that your congregation and community can enter into solidarity with us. There will be a time of […]

Tim Wise on White Privilege: Uprooting Racism, Privilege and Institutional Inequity Organizer

First Congregational Church of Oakland 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA, United States

Lincoln Training Institute is excited to announce that Tim Wise, prominent anti-racist essayist and educator, will provide an opportunity to examine what it means to be white in a nation created for the benefit of those who are “white like him,” and how privilege seeps into every institutional arrangement, from education to employment to the justice system. Tim Wise, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown,” is among the nation’s most prominent anti-racist essayists and educators. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise’s antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and […]
