Anticipates Over 900 Youth To Receive Tools for School
On Saturday August 28th, Oakland Natives Give Back (ONGB) community partners with Oakland Mayors’ Office, Oakland Unified School District, and other organizations to host the 3rd Annual “Attend & Achieve Back to School Rally,” an all-day fun-filled expo, from 9:00am – 3:00pm, at Oakland’s City Hall.
The event is designed to encourage Oakland youngsters to attend school regularly and provide relevant information and resources to youth and their parents to celebrate the start of a new school year.
“I have vivid memories of my childhood summers and the fun I had when my mom and I went to get the items I needed to be prepared for the first day of school,” says ONGB co-founder Nyeisha DeWitt. “This is a feeling every child should experience. But the reality is, during these pressing economic times, many parents are making tough choices between buying tools for school and putting food on the table. Our goal has always been to relieve some of the burden parents experience by helping to ensure their children have positive experiences around education. We want them to feel empowered and inspired as they enter the school year- with hopes that those feeling will ultimately last throughout the year,” continues DeWitt.
Oakland Natives Give Back and partners will provide the opportunity for over 900 deserving Oakland Unified School District students – kindergarten through 12th grade – to receive much needed “tools for school”, resources and information that will be useful throughout the school year.
OUSD School Board President Noel Gallo and other invited school board members will be on hand to deliver remarks on the importance of school attendance, encouraging students to reach beyond the boundaries of their physical surroundings and help kick-off this year’s “Attendance and Academic Achievement” campaign.
Pre-registration is mandatory. To register, and for more event information, visit http://backtoschoolrally2010.eventbrite.com.
