The Spelman College Glee Club of Atlanta, Georgia, will perform at the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend Dr. Alvin C. Bernstine, Pastor, at 6:00 PM, Sunday, March 11.
The Progressive Baptist Missionary Educational District Association, Reverend Dr. Rodney Leggett, Moderator, collaborated with the Bethlehem Church family to bring this world renowned choir to the City of Richmond.
The Spelman College Glee Club, whose repertoire consists of sacred and secular choral literature for women’s voices with special emphasis on traditional spirituals, music by African-American composers, and music from many cultures and commissioned works, has maintained a reputation of choral excellence for over fifty years.
The Spelman College Glee Club, currently under the direction of Dr. Kevin Johnson, Assistant Professor of Music, has traveled throughout the country performing for a variety of audiences; performed in concert halls such as Fanueil Hall (Boston), the Brooklyn Academy of Music (NY),Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and in churches, high schools, colleges, and universities; and internationally, to Brazil and Canada.
The Glee Club had the unique opportunity to perform with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with the world-renowned singer, Jessye Norman, in a Martin Luther King Jr., Birthday Celebration, and has also been featured on “Performance Today” for National Public Radio. A perennial highlight of the Christmas season in Atlanta is the Christmas Carol Concert presented by both the Spelman and Morehouse College Glee Clubs. The audience swells to over 6,000 for the three nights of these festive concerts. Other major performances of the Spelman Glee Club include the Spring Concert Tour, and the Annual Fall and Spring Concerts at Spelman.
We invite you to join us in this historical and spirit-filled event at Bethlehem. The church is located at 684 Juliga Woods Street (formerly Erlandson), Richmond CA.
