Church Mega-Drama, ‘Greenleaf’ Airs on OWN in 2-Night Series Premiere

Family Megachurch Drama Debuts June 21 and 22

The new original drama series from award-winning writer/producer Craig Wright (“Lost,” “Six Feet Under,” “Brothers and Sisters”) takes viewers into the unscrupulous world of the Greenleaf family and their sprawling Memphis megachurch, where scandalous secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful.

One can only imaging the trials and triumphs a family goes through, while serving a church of this size. From internal family dynamics, to the dynamics of a “mega-church”, and the community around them – it looks like Greenleaf is set to take us behind the curtain.

Like so many megachurches in America, Greenleaf World Ministries is more than just a house of worship. It’s a home. It’s the center of the community for the thousands of predominantly African-American members who attend services there.  But beneath its steeple lies a den of iniquity — greed, adultery, sibling rivalry and conflicting values — a multigenerational matrix of deception that involves the church’s founding family, but also extends to the congregation and prominent members of the Memphis community and beyond. Yet, amidst all of the mayhem and deception, the power of something greater persists, calling everyone to conscience for their sins.

Born of the church, the Greenleaf family love and care for each other, but beneath the surface lies a den of iniquity — greed, adultery, sibling rivalry and conflicting values — that threatens to tear apart the very core of their faith that holds them together.  “Greenleaf” stars Merle Dandridge (“The Night Shift”) as Grace “Gigi” Greenleaf; Keith David (“Community”) as Bishop James Greenleaf; Lynn Whitfield (“The Josephine Baker Story”) as Lady Mae Greenleaf; Kim Hawthorne (“Rake”) as Kerissa Greenleaf; Lamman Rucker (“Meet the Browns”) as Jacob Greenleaf; Tye White (“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”) as Kevin Satterlee; Deborah Joy Winans (“Whitney”) as Charity Greenleaf-Satterlee; Desiree Ross (“Falling Skies”) as Sophia; and Oprah Winfrey (“Selma”) in a recurring role as Mavis McCready.  “Greenleaf” is produced for OWN by Lionsgate Television.

A rerecording of the classic “Satan, We’re Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down,” by “the queen of gospel music,” Pastor Shirley Caesar, draws you in with her distinctive voice, background rhythm and harmony.  This was a perfect theme song selection for the new series. Take a look at the making of the theme:
