Covid-19 can’t stop the cultural awakening taking place this year. This year’s observances of Juneteenth might be slightly different compared to years past, but the celebration continues, increasing awareness about the nations oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.
Nearly two and a half years following President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (1863), many were still enslaved and unaware of their freedom, performing indentured servitude in hopes of “earning” their freedom.
The 13th Amendment later abolished slavery throughout the US, and was ratified in 1865.
Check out list list of Bay Area happenings throughout the weekend in observance of Juneteenth…and PLEASE practice social distancing while wearing your protective mask if you choose to attend an in-person celebration.
