Pilot Math Learning Program to be Introduced

The Oakland Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will hold a press conference on Friday, May 14, 2010 at 11:00 AM to showcase Reasoning Mind, a pilot math learning program that has been introduced at Carl Munck Elementary School. The press conference will be held at the campus, located at 11900 Campus Drive, Oakland, CA.

Reasoning Mind is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 to provide innovative methods of teaching mathematics, allowing second-grade students enrolled in the program at Carl Munck Elementary to receive individualized lessons and greater one-on-one interaction with teachers through the use of ground-breaking classroom computer technology.

In a Reasoning Mind classroom setting, each student is assigned to a computer and works directly online using software that allows them to work at his or her own pace. This approach permits teachers to provide one-on-one help and attention to struggling students, while advanced students are afforded the opportunity to advance through the math curriculum to more challenging math concepts at their own pace.

The program was introduced in the Houston Independent School District and other area districts and students in the program illustrated significant improvement in their math scores. Representatives from the Reason Minds program sponsors – Bechtel Foundation and Exxon Mobil Foundation – will be in attendance at the press conference to discuss the impact of this innovative math-learning program.
