Bay Area native, gospel legend, and Pastor Bishop Walter L. Hawkins has passed away at 61.

7/14 Update: Homegoing Services are tentatively scheduled for 7:30PM Tues., July 20th (Musical Tribute), and 11AM Wed., July 21st (Homegoing Celebration). BOTH services will be held at the Paramount Theatre. 2025 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612-2303.  At the request of the family, please wear CREAM to the Wednesday Homegoing Celebration

As news of Bishop Walter L. Hawkins’ homegoing began to spread, I, like many wanted to believe the numerous text messages, Facebook & Twitter updates were untrue.

Hawkins, who was battling pancreatic cancer, passed away at his home in Ripon, Calif., his older brother Edwin Hawkins said.

During his 2009 birthday celebration, Hawkins, began to share with his congregation and larger Bay Area community his story of recovery and triumph.  During his recent birthday celebration, he continued to share his unwavering faith in knowing God was ministering through him with this illness.

“Today, I lost my brother, my pastor, and my best friend,” said Edwin Hawkins. “Bishop Hawkins suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and he will be greatly missed.”

On behalf of Faith in the Bay, I send my prayers and support to the entire Hawkins Family & Love Center Ministries community near and far – whom he loved so very dearly.  He was more than music, he was ministry.

    Funeral services pending.
