Don’t Let Soreness Stop You from Exercising

All of the new-found energy and increased activity may be making you feel a little sore. Muscle soreness is common when you start a new routine and your muscles are working harder, longer, or doing something completely different than before.

Muscle soreness, which typically occurs a day or two after an activity, results from microscopic muscle or connective tissue damage. These aches and pains should be minor, and are simply indications that muscles are adapting to your fitness regimen. As the muscles heal from this “damage” they will become stronger.

Before soreness stops you from working out or participating in physical activity, consider these quick tips:

    • Don’t think you’re out of shape because you get sore.  When you do something new be prepared for soreness and don’t let it get you down or stop you from continuing your goals.
    • A cool-down phase added to your exercise session or massage may help reduce soreness.
    • Don’t avoid working out because of muscle soreness. Just tone it down and take it easy until the soreness lessens. Keeping the muscles in motion actually helps.
    • If you’re still concerned talk to a personal trainer or fitness professional and discuss your workout routine to see if any changes should be made.

“Nothing happens until something moves.”  Keep moving!
