    Staying Active During Pregnancy

For some women, pregnancy is an excuse to quit or slack off on their workouts and to start eating more. This is the opposite of what you should do. It is important to take care of your body by exercising and maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy to ensure a healthy childbirth. There are ways to help get through the discomfort of common pregnancy symptoms in order to stay active.

Here are five tips that will help you overcome common pregnancy symptoms that often lead to inactivity.

    1. Overcoming Nausea
Nausea is most common during the first trimester. If it is more noticeable in the evening, schedule your workout for the morning. Find the time of day when the feeling is less prominent. Keep the activity low impact and try a bland snack before hand.

    2. Decreasing Joint Pain
To take the pressure off your joints, try low impact cardio workouts such as swimming, recumbent bike, or the elliptical climber. Increasing blood flow will help loosen the joints and decrease the achy feeling.

    3. Battling Frequent Urination
As the uterus grows, it puts pressure on the bladder and the urge to go the bathroom increases. With this in mind, go for a walk in the mall or a local park where you know bathrooms are available.

    4. Minimizing Breast Soreness
Wear a comfortable, supportive sports bra.  Also, choose activities that require smooth movements such as swimming, recumbent bike to minimize discomfort.

    5. Overcoming Fatigue
Stay motivated. Join a pre-natal yoga, Pilates, or group fitness class. Surrounding yourself with women who are experiencing the same feelings and physiological conditions can be helpful and may be the motivation you need to get off of the couch and get moving.

Every pregnancy is different and it is important to check with your doctor before doing any physical activity. Overall, staying active during pregnancy can make the transition into motherhood easier. You will have more energy and will be able to meet the new demands of being a parent.

    Health and happiness, Kriss
